From Middle English humanyte, humanite, humanitye, from Old French humanité, from Latin humanitas (“human nature, humanity, also humane conduct”), from humanus (“human, humane”); see human, humane. The interjection was first used ("Oh, the humanity!") by Herbert Morrison reporting on the Hindenburg disaster.
