(aiz, “ore”)), from Proto-Indo-European *áyos, h?éyos. Compare Dutch oer (“iron-holding earth”). Confer Latin aes (“bronze, copper”), Avestan ????? (aiiah), Sanskrit ???? (áyas, “copper, iron”).
