From Middle English herse, hers, herce, from Old French herce, from Medieval Latin hercia, from Latin herpicem, hirpex; ultimately from Oscan ?????? (hirpus, “wolf”), a reference to the teeth. The Oscan term is related to Latin hirsutus (“bristly, shaggy”). Doublet of hirsute.
