Etymology

An allusion to Admiral Edward Vernon (nicknamed "Old Grog" after the grogram coat he habitually wore), who in 1740 ordered his sailors' rum to be watered down. Alternatively from Catalan groc (“yellow”), the colour of the low-quality alcohol.
