Definition gas

Etymology 1

Borrowed from Dutch gas [1650s], coined by chemist Jan Baptist van Helmont. Probably derived from Dutch chaos (“chaos”), from Ancient Greek ???? (kháos, “chasm, void, empty space”); perhaps inspired by geest (“breath, vapour, spirit”).
